Please add the following to your "In Momoriam". CWO Phil Herbert, MMM, CD was the last Construction Military Engineer CWO posted at CFB Lahr when the Base closed in 1994. He was well known in the area and will be dearly missed by his wife Donna, the Hebert family and his many friends around the world. Hebert - Phillip Joseph Andrew, CWO, MMM, CD2 (Ret’d), born September 1, 1943 in Wilkie SK, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2006 with Donna, his loving wife and best friend of 42 years by his side. Phillip joined the military in 1960 at the age of 16. Starting as a Sapper Apprentice, he went on to enjoy a long and successful career with the Canadian Military Engineers. He retired in 1995 and although he and Donna settled in Chilliwack they spent their summers RV’ing in Edmonton AB, close to the grand-kids. He was an amazing man; a good son and brother, a loving husband and father, a proud grandfather and a loyal friend. Predeceased by his father, Dolor (Slim) Hebert, Phillip is survived by his mother Elizabeth (Betty) Hebert of Calgary; his wife Donna of Chilliwack; his daughters Kim Hawkins-Gillingham (Randy) and Debi Hawkes (Charlie), both of Edmonton; five grand- daughters, Katie (Ray), Jessica, Ashley, Delaney & Dallas; two great-grandchildren, Aspen & Brody (born Nov 30/06); Phillip was a big brother to and survived by Gary Hebert and Jeannie Trach, both of Calgary and Faye Bystrom of Wetaskiwin AB. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other family and many friends. I was just informed of this site by a friend of mine who attended the last reunion. A wonderfull site it is, brings back many menories of the best posting I had. I was in Lahr 1973 til the end of 1976 when I remustered from Supply Tech to SAR Tech and returned to Canada. I worked at Base Supply in the PMQ Supply Section. I was president of the Lahr Sub-Aqua club. My wife, Nancy, worked in the Base Hospital. I would love to attend a reunion in 2007.

Still love to visit the site. Nice to see that so many people think as fondly about their past experiences in Germany as I do. Still miss it dearly today! I do think that Doug Aldridge should find a better forum for his advertizing and opinions though. Don't get me wrong here - I did enjoy listening to Doug during his days as a radio announcer at CFRN. To many of us the radio station was our link back to Canada - those of you that remember when there was no TV, and most did not have phones back then, just good old mail service (CFPO 5000)! I suggest he uses the good list of links this site has. All the best to everyone out there and a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

After the 2004 Reunion there was talk of a Reunion in 2007 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the opening of 1 wing Lahr, does anyone know if this is going to happen as 2007 is fast approaching.

A wonderful experience with wonderful memories. Unfortunately we repatted early due to health issues with me and our 2 boys. I would like to find a person that i met when i was in Lahr(81-84). Her name was Angelica(may be Angelika) Moore. This web site is heavy with souvenirs. Best time of my career (84-88) as most serving Canadians. With the challenges the Forces are now facing, our brothers and sisters are being challenged around the world (i.e.: Afghanistan) with a heavy tool; makes me wonder if these were two different worlds/times? Hi, I served in Lahr fm 82-86. Spent 6 mo. with 4 CMBG HQ & Signals Squadron, and 3 1/2 yrs with 4 Combat Engineer Regiment (as a Radio Operator). Great site...Now rtd fm military, and working full time as a civilian member of the RCMP force in Fredericton N.B.(as a Dispatcher). Hope to hear fm someone that i know out there.. Wow things have changed since i last was in Lahr 1987-1992.The centenial club was a meeting place/home for a lot of single rats that can look back and say they have meat so many good friend there as i did . I sit at the Stamtish table which is in Kingston Ont from time to time and yes tell stories of the table The gang knows. The pics of the base today brings tears to a strong heart the kind of tears i know are out there for all whom were posted in such a wounderfull place.Nice web site you have please keep up the outstanding work you make us all PROUD. I am sorry to see the news about the death of Karl-Heinz M. (In Memoriam) in May '06. I met him while I worked at 4CMBG HQ in Lahr '76-77 and last saw him and his wife at at DND teachers' reunion in Ottawa(?) in the late 80s. He was always a very cheerful person and helpful to everyone.

Closed Metz in 67 to move to lahr till summer of 68. Had some fun at Hufeisen bar in Kippenheim (Flora's place). Great Site, and Great Job. I was in Lahr with my Parents Sgt. Gerry and Rita Cherlet and my Brother Stephen from July 1970 to July 1975. Best years and memories of my life. Quel merveilleux site! Il m'arrive une chose tout à fait incroyable: je viens à peine de le découvrir, et voilà que je tombe sur un message écrit par la mère de ma meilleure amie du temps que je fréquentais l'école Général Georges Vanier! N'est-ce pas surprenant un peu!? J'ai vécu à Lahr avec ma famille de 74 à 77; mon père enseignait à l'école Vanier, la physique et la chimie, ma mère était animatrice à la radio des Forces Armées Canadiennes (elle a travaillé avec Diane Simard, Claude Morency et Claire Patterson entre autres.) et ma soeur Hélène fréquentait aussi l'école Vanier. Ses meilleures amies étaient Allison Benner et Johanne Gosselin. Moi, j'avais 8 ans à l'époque et j'étais dans la classe d'Adèle Gendron, à l'école Vanier. J'aimerais tant la retrouver, elle a été précieuse pour moi et j'aimerais lui dire merci pour tout ce qu'elle a fait pour moi. Mes meilleures amies étaient Angela Messier (c'est de sa mère que j'ai lu le message ce soir), Nadine Normand, Lise Dumont, Danielle Desjardins (on était inséparables!) et Sylvie Longval. Mon Dieu, il y aurait tellement de choses à dire. Disons que je suis vraiment enchantée d'avoir trouvé votre site, qui m'a permis de revoir la ville et ses environs, la Kaserne (dans un triste état, que ça fait mal de voir cela!) et de peut-être avoir retrouvé une amie d'enfance, Angela Messier. Je vivais au 5-11 Romerstrasse (quelle vue on avait de cet endroit!! que de mauvais coups j'ai faits là avec mes amis! que de souvenirs!!) It's wonderful to see a site dedicated to those who have been based at CFB Lahr (I myself am an Army Brat).I lived in Germany with my parents Earl & Judy Corbin (my dad was always called Tim). This was my father's third tour of duty into Germany (and his last);during this last posting (1975-1979)he was apart of the 129 AAD Battery (Air to Air Defence) in CFB Lahr. As for myself I was aged 5 when we arrived in '75 and 9 years old when we were posted back to Canada.I have many fond memories of school trips to Austria,France and many other places (I went to Guetenburg Elementary School from grade 1 to 3;yes I was held back in grade 2). I was told of this site by Hildegard Conrad (her husband was Red Conrad who was with 1 RCHA in CFB Lahr). Hildegard still lives in Lahr (and visited us in Nova Scotia just this past week) however Red passed away 2 years ago. If anybody remembers my father (Tim Corbin) from 129 AAD Battery it would be great to hear from any of you. You can forward your memories to me at my email address and I can relay them to my father as he only lives down the road from me in Yarmouth,Nova Scotia. My father is retired from the military after spending 32 years in the Artillery and is enjoying his time with my mother and his first grandchild (Abby).

Hi, I was told about this site by a dear friend of ours just today.Haven't been back to Lahr since 1979 when my father was posted to Yarmouth,Nova Scotia (have been here ever since). I was an Army Brat during my life in Lahr (1975-1979) and I have such great memories of my childhood riding bikes and just getting into mischief. I was only 5 years old when I arrived in Lahr and went to school at Guetenburg Elementary School (just down a lane from a movie theatre.I wonder if the theatre is still there?). As for my father he was stationed with 129 AAD Battery in CFB Lahr (his name is Earl Corbin but,was always called Tim). It would be great to hear from other Army Brats that lived in Germany during my time there or it even hear from others who remember working with my father. Fantastic! well done Trish, my best memories are when we lived in Germany, from 72 - 79 and 80 - 84, more precisely in Frisenheim and Kippenheimweiler. Two of my children were born there there. We visited and skied everywhere. Life was wonderful. Someday, I will return...

My wife, Edelgard, and I where posted to Lahr twice. I retired in Lahr 1995 and we stayed and work in Lahr until, sadly my dear wife Edelgard passed away April 2000. I returned to Canada Nov 2001.

Served 3 tours in Germany, Hemer 1965-1969, Lahr 1RCHA 72-76 and 82-86. Would love to see my Old Landlord Kaus Anton from Reichenbach. Loved those years in Germany and still miss the food & drink. Coached and played hockey and played softball every season, golfed in Gutach and Baden with John Cummings. Those were the best of times and we never thought they would end. I was a dependent wife in Lahr 72-27, and in Soest 65-68. I worked at Der Kanadier when Frank Kohler was the "Boss". I also worked with Rini Biggs, Mr. Van Aggelen, Joanne Aubé (married Paul Harrison who worked at the CANEX), Louise Trinque, Laural Sutherland, and Muriel Cormier. I have no idea where these people are, except for Joanne Harrison and Muriel Cormier. My husband was Roger Messier (Sgt) Graphic Artist at HQ CMBG, the Kaserne in Bldg 3 where Der Kanadier was, too. We lived in Area 34-12-6. My 3 girls (Brenda - 44, Angela - 40, Lise - 38) attended George Vanier, and no.4 (Rachel - 36) attended a German Kindergarten in Kippenheimweiler. This October I will be taking my 4 girls on a trip down memory lane to Germany to visit Rathenow (near Berlin) where I was born, to Iserlohn where both Angela and Lise were born, to Wameldorf (near Soest) where we lived, and to Kippenheimweiler where we will visit Rachel's babysitter's family. She and I were there last September and had a terrific time. Lots of champagne and good beer - boy, they sure know how to have a good time!!!! Had a tour around the Kaserne and the base where accessible, but found it very desolate and in great need of repair - especially the Kaserne. I now live in Ottawa and found this site while surfing - having retired in March 2005 - I seem to have lots of time on my hands. Would love to hear from some old friends and always ready to make new ones. Great site that brings back oodles of memories.

Hi everyone! I spent all my childhood in Lahr and with the Canadians. Now I am living in Montreux/Switzerland and very often checking on the derK site to see what's happening in and around Lahr. I was a volunteer at derKanadier when I was younger, some should still know me. It's good to see that this spirit is still alive and we have to try to keep it going. During easter, when I was back to Lahr to see my family I saw this BMW with the those "well known" licence plates with the red letters. The family was from Ottawa serving in Geilenkirchen coming to see what changend. For a moment it felt that the Canadians were still in Lahr. Served in Lahr 1980 - 1986, first with the RCDs in SPSS, and then at Base Supply. Lived in Schutterzell the first year & then moved to MQs in Langenwinkel for the last 5 years. Played a lot of hockey & fastball and had a great six years - lots of great memories.
