These logs gathered ice from water spray - they were being kept covered with water from hose pipes to prevent insects and mould from damaging the wood during the mostly mild winter weather (there hasn’t been much snow in the Black Forest). This timber pile is located between Lahr airfield and the A5 Autobahn and is one of many set up in the local area since hurricane "Lothar" felled millions of trees on 26 December 1999
