The official opening of the new elementary school "Geroldseckerschule" located not far from the Lahr Kaserne. This new building became necessary after the withdrawal of the Canadian Forces in 1994 to provide education near their new homes for so many children of German ancestry who had arrived from Eastern Europe (photos). |

The new branch of the Müller drugstore chain now under construction on the Schlossplatz in downtown Lahr is due of open on 21 February 2001. The façade of the former Ferber furniture store had to be retained; unfortunately the foundations of the castle tower (like the Stork Tower) which were found underneath were not kept. The new building has beeng completed in 10 months of work. The interior is now being fitted into the new structure (photos). |

The bankrupt Baden-Soellingen Airpark is up for sale, but the provincial government has not yet decided whether Stuttgart Airport will take it over or whether the British Wiggins Group will be permitted to buy it. |

Lahr’s former lord mayor Dr. Philipp Brucker is still active as an author and presenter. He signed his latest work at Lahr’s Christmas market (photo).

Last weekend computer hackers broke into Lahr’s homepage and manipulated the list of employees working for the city, changing names, titles etc. The city administration has lodged a complaint and police are investigating.

Lahr Airport has finally received permission to transport air-freight on a regular basis without tonnage limitation as has been the case until now. However, the provincial government has restricted the number of night flights to only four, with a maximum noise level of only 75 decibels. This now finally opens the way to the commercial development of Lahr Airport, according to the company‘s chairman of the board Martin Herrenknecht

The provincial government announced that Stuttgart Airport will take over the bankrupt Baden-Soellingen Airpark on 1. 1. 2001. The British Wiggins Group was not favoured because it wanted complete control of development. In the next 10 years, DM 200 million will be invested in improving the facilites, although Lahr already has the better and longer runway.

At a press conference, Baden-Württemberg’s Provincial Minister of Transport stated that he sees no chance for Lahr because he is backing Stuttgart, Friedrichshafen and Baden-Soellingen airports for the future flight network.

A fire in an amusement arcade (Spielpalast) in Lahr-Mieters-
heim caused damage of DM 500 000. The cause of the fire is unknown. (photos)
At a another press conference, Baden-Württemberg’s Provincial Minister of Transport revoked his previous statement and declared that Lahr Airport does have a chance after all!!

The village of Reichenbach, which is part of Lahr’s administrative district, nowhas its own website www.lahr-reichenbach.de with information about the local community, its clubs and activities.
