The Chrysanthemum Festival in the fall was so successful at increasing the reputation of the city of Lahr that it is to be held again this year, with more <participation from local people (photos).

The 2-day International Volksmarsch event held in Kippenheim-Schmieheim registered 1461 walkers despite rain and snow. There were participants from France, Austria, Switzerland and of course Germany- the oldest walker was an 89-year-old man from Würzburg, the youngest was a 5 year-old girl from Mahlberg.
The distance was 10 kilometres for adults and 5 km for children.

Lahr Airport Company intends to invest a total of 10 million marks in upgrading the facilities. Absolute priority will be given to completing the already started installation of oil filters, re-surfacing the taxiway, removing rubber tire marks from the runway and establishing a group of fire-fighters. The lights on the runway must also be replaced because their approval certificate is only valid until 2002, the flight guiding system must be improved and suitable equipment acquired for loading and unloading large transport aircraft. |

The world’s biggest tunnel drill (14.20 metres in diameter) is nearly ready to leave the Herrenknecht factory in Schwanau-Allmannsweier. It will be delivered to Russia by September 2001 where it will be used to build two highway tunnels in Moscow, each 2 km long. (Photo)
