The Rhine River is extremely swollen due to heavy rainfall and spring melt, making it flow over its banks. Shipping has been halted north of Karlsruhe but there has been no significant flood damage as yet.
Because of the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in France, a disinfection gate has been set up at the Rhine crossing at Nonnenweier to spray all the vehicles entering Germany. The constant disinfection service is being carried out by local volunteer firefighters working in three-hour shifts. |

The demolished north wing of the Lahr City Hall is planned for complete reconstruction by the fall of 2002. The total redesigning of Lahr’s City Hall Square is now starting. (We’ll keep you supplied with photos of this on-going project) |

Nestler Wellpappe (corrugated cardboard company) is due to move into new premises now being completed in Lahr’s western industrial zone. The firm‘s old building, located beside the Stadtpark, is due to be demolished and private housing built on the site. (photos) |

Mannheim Civil Court confirmed that it has received 15 complaint suits against the air freight permit issued to the Lahr Airport Company, but Lahr airport manager Kurt Jäger still remains optimistic as to the future of air operations.
After a break of eight years, Lahr is again planning to hold a festival week, from 22 to 30 June this year. The big downtown street fest is to take place on the theme "Europe" on Saturday and Sunday 23rd and 24th June. Further highlights will be a Rose Evening, a children’s party and a Lantern Festival with fireworks in the Stadtpark.
Renovations have begun on the old train station in Seelbach (photo), abandonned when bus services were introduced in the 1950s. By this fall the building is to be turned into a museum with displays about the history of the Geroldseck family and castle as well as with tourist information and cultural events.
The annual Spring Market and Sunday shopping day known as "Blütensonntag" (Blossom Sunday) attracted huge crowds to downtown Lahr. The stores were open for five hours on Sunday afternoon. The local retailers and market stallholders were generally satisfied with their sales on that day.

Nestler has decided to buy the building and land on Lahr airfeild which it has rented since last October (former Lahr Air Defence Unit), located on the right after Canadian Forces Base main gate. The companies Nestler GmbH, Nestler TechCenter Büromöbel (office furniture) and Nestler TechLine were all formed by former employees after the bankruptcy of the original parent company (Nestler Zeichentechnik) located on Alte Bahnhofstraße in Lahr. The new traffic circle is now complete at the intersection of Rheinstrasse and Flugplatzstrasse, on the way from Lahr to the airfield (photos).
