German statutory holiday for May Day (spring holiday) and Labour Day: the weather was wonderful for all the people going our for the traditional walk or cycle-ride in the country as well as for the many festivities and events being held (photos). Our photographer was in Ottenheim where everyone was óut and about,enjoying the brilliant sunshine.

The French-German Friendship Festival Vis-a-vis Fest) was held at the campsite in Erstein this year, but was unfortunately washed out because it poured with rain all day!

The Canadians have not been forgotten in Lahr! The Lahr German-Canadian Friendship Club celebrated its 30th anniversary on the very day of its founding (5 May 1971: Europe Day especially chosen because of its implications for international understanding). During the jubilee celebrations, Brigitte and Jürgen Kull (club founder) were appointed honorary members. Many other members received plaqued in recognition of their long-time membership (see photos under the club section). Special guests included Lahr's present Lord Mayor Dr. Wolfgang Müller, former Lord Mayor Dr. Philipp Brucker (at the time of the clubs founding), Mr. Jean Fredette, head of Public Affairs and Culture at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin and Theo Rudolf Schweikert, the Canadian Honorary Consul in Stuttgart.

A special inline-skating event was held in the former ice-skating rink (Maply Leaf Arena) on Lahr airfield by the Lahr sports store Sportservice Strauß (which has rented the place for a year) and the local Road Safety Committee, supported by the local medical insurance company. About 100 inline-skaters learned how to behave in road traffic.

The longest suspension bridge in the world (218 m long and 30 metres high) was officially opened to the public in Steinwasen Nature Park in the southern Black Forest, thus surpassing the size of the famous Capilano Suspension Bridge in N. Vancouver in B.C., Canada, on which its design was based. The gigantic new construction with 100 mm steel cables and huge foundations in the rock can carry up to 1000 persons at a time. Grafenhausen, the village on the Rhine plain not far from the Europapark in Rust, will receive an extra attraction this summer. A field with a surface area of 2.25 hectares has been specially sowed so that it will later form a maize maze located right beside the Autobahn exit (photo).

The Wiggins Group announced that it will invest DM 60 million in Lahr Airport. Freight flight are expected to start operating in about six montths, and passenger flights will also be envisaged if demand warrants them. They cite the South African company, Mike Krüger Airlines, as a potential client. It is looking for a suitable airfield to import fruit, vegetables and flowers into Germany and then transport goods from Northern Europe on the return journey.

The former Canadian Forces Sports Centre with indoor swimming pool has been sold to the Rodermund company from Mahlberg. The former sports hall will be used for the manufacture of Christmas, Easter and various other seasonal decorations and the swimming pool area will be used for storage and dispatch of such articles. About 30 employees will work in the building which has been altered and renovated at a cost of about DM 300,000.

The new Black Forest farmhouse restaurant was officially opened at the Seelbach Camp Site. It was built in Canadian log cabin by two Canadian and two local German carpenters. (See photos and link to Sunset Log Homes Ltd.)

This summer the Vis-a-vis Bus will again offer the opportunity of visit the French side of the Rhine: it will run every weekend until 13 October. The fare from Lahr to Obernai costs 7 DM (3.58 Euro) per adult; children under 11 ride for free.

On Whit Monday (Pentecost) a "Mill Fest" will be held in the forest belonging to Orschweier (Bergwald) to inaugurate the world's biggest modern windmills. Their total height is 120 m, the rotor diameter is 80 m, and their electricity production capacity amounts to 2.5 megawatts, enought to supply a community of 2000 inhabitants.
