An armed bank-robbery took place in the Lahr main branch of the Sparkasse (Photo) in Schillerstrasse. An unmasked 30-40-year-old man walked in, showed the teller his gun and handed over a written demand for large bank notes. He put the money in a fabric shopping bag and simply jogged away from the scene of the crime towards post office.

The Terrassenbad openair swimming pool has closed after a successful summer season but the Lahr indoor pool (Hallendbad) has had problems since it was supposed to open at the beginning of October. The pool employees complained of breathing difficulties and feeling ill, so the indoor pool was closed for health reasons in case there was some kind of chemical danger. An enquiry found no technical reason for these problems, so the pool is now open to the public after a three-week delay.

The Sulz openair swimming pool has now been closed for some years for technical reasons and was not repaired/rebuilt due of lack of financing. The Lahr city council has now approved a new plan that will allow the pool to be transformed into a "natural pool" with a surface area of 900 sq.m. (i.e. it will not be heated, etc. for economic reasons). This means it could also be used for ice-skating in winter (if the weather gets cold enough).

The city of Lahr has officially applied to the famous Munich automobile manufacturer BMW (Bavarian Motor Works) for the building of a future assembly plant in Lahr, offering a location on the former Canadian Forces Base on the western part of the airfield. Many other towns and cities have also applied, so there is little likelihood that this idea will really come to fruition but it has still become the subject of a much political controversy between the Lahr city council and Lahr's lord mayor Dr. Wolfgang Müller.

The former Canadian Forces bunker B-108 on Lahr airfield has been turned into a practice place for 13 local rock bands. It's an ideal rehearsal venue for electric guitarists, drummers etc. because it's sound-proof! You may recognize some of the group names: Scaramouche, Hound Dogs, Allasmaraine.
