Harry Stone, retired RCAF-CAF.

Harry was a radar tech who joined the RCAF in the early 1950s. One of many
specialists recruited from England. Harry retired from the Canadian Forces
in the early 70s and became the Sr. Technicial manager at CFN-S, Baden.
Harry was a meticulous tech...and before anyone got on air...they had to
show Harry that they knew how to operate the equipment...properly...or else.
Beneath the gruff exterior, Harry Stone was a man of great humour. Later
in life than most, he took up golf with great passion. He loved his Pings
and was happiest touring Baden Hills for 18 holes with Dave and Doug. Harry
retired in 1991 and returned to England, with his wife Betty. They lived
happily near Ipswich. Harry died following complications from surgery in

REQUIEM IN PACE

Jochen Vattes
1939-2003

Jochen Vattes was well-known to Lahr Canadians for his friendly, out-going character. When the Canadian Forces arrived in Lahr in 1967, he was one of only a few Germans in the area at that time who spoke good English! As an enthusiastic service representative for VW Link, later as sales manager, then as an independent road-accident insurance assessor, he developed a lot of Canadian contacts and established friendships that were maintained over the years.

He had experienced health problems for the past 10 years. He died on 2 April 2003 at the age of 64 but his death was not officially announced in Lahr until after the funeral a week later, so we actually received the bad news from Canada first.

Jochen Vattes was not only active in fostering good German-Canadian relations for many years but also involved in pragmatic political work in the local community as an elected representative for the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) on Lahr’s city council for the periods 1990-1994 and 1997-1999.

We express our deepest sympathy to his wife Rosy, whose bereavement is particularly painful because her 88-year-old father died only hours before her husband, and to their daughter Ronja Vattes, who studied journalism and was recently appointed newspaper editor-in-chief to the Lahr section of the ”Badische Zeitung”.
